This Is Not A « 25 Things… » List, Nor A How-To, Will You Still Read It?
Have we become addicted to lists, how-to’s, and other advice related articles that tell us how to live? By now, I wonder, are there “15 Things…” lists on the Internet for about every problem we experience?
I have no right to complain, as I do exactly the same: not only have I managed my online preferences (newsletter settings, social media accounts I follow, etc.) to provide me with these types of writings, I have also written plenty of them myself. I am an accomplice in my own question, and in my observation of this trend.
Seeing as we are approaching the end of a calendar year, this is also the peak point for these kind of readings. The hope of improvement tags along with the near start of a new year. Simultaneously, the finish of the “old” year holds the promise to transmute our 2018 failures into 2019 do-overs.
It feels like we have a clean slate ahead.
Of course this is a mere illusion, and a worldwide agreed upon one at that. We can start over any day — better yet: any moment! — we want to. However, the way we’ve “organized” time provides us with a clear cut, an outstanding moment, from December 31st to January 1st.
And thus we start wondering HOW TO finally make those desired changes in the next year, what NOT TO DO when applying for the refresh button, and the 10 THINGS we need to remember for living a better year.
Hence the abundance of lists and how-to articles, all meant to help us solve whatever particular challenge we are facing in order to change. The realization that we made the same attempt last year (remember?) enhances the feeling of helplessness even more. What if we fail again? What does it take to make a change last? How many of those advice driven articles should we read to do it right this time?
I don’t know. After all, I promised a list-less, non-how-to article in the title.
Let me whisper something in your ear, though. Yes, you have to come closer…closer still…a little closer. Okay:
How about you create your own list? Of…whatever you feel like putting on a list?
What if you write your own how-to? Of…whatever you know how-to do?
I won’t tell anyone if you don’t. It’s just that I happen to think we already know what to do, and what not to do, to make lasting changes. We’re so used to looking for answers outside of ourselves, that any new question triggers a frantic search for whatever piece of information feels satisfying enough. But if we’d just stop DOING all that for a second, and start BEING with whatever the question may be, we could feel a gentle push coming from inside.
It’s the gentlest touch of LOVE. Always there, always ready to be felt, and independent of whatever moment in time we think we are at. And the best thing is: we don’t have to DO anything to feel it, we merely have to BE.
Therefore, my wish for YOU is that you get to experience that touch of love once. You don’t have to wait till 2019 neither, you can feel it now. Close your eyes…breathe…feel what you feel…
