One Earthquake After Another, And It Tickles
“An essential part of the awakening is the recognition of the unawakened you, the ego as it thinks, speaks and acts, as well as the recognition of the collectively conditioned mental processes that perpetuate the unawakened state.”
(Tolle 2016: 7)
I have started reading A New Earth, by Eckhart Tolle. I’ve read about a third of the book now, and I (my ego) wish I could say something “wise” about it. I can’t. It wouldn’t make sense.
So why mention it?
Because I am so fascinated by it. Because it makes me wonder who I am. Because it keeps my mind, and thus my ego, busy in new and miraculous ways. Because it sets off new thoughts.
(And yes, I am slightly addicted to the act of creating a new thought. A thought of which I am sure I’ve never thought it before.)
Keeping it light: everything around me keeps going. The world is still spinning, nothing has changed on the outside. It’s merely my inner world that experiences one earthquake after another, and it tickles. It makes me even more grateful for where I am – in life, in the world – and for being able to wonder who I am…
“Don’t take the ego too seriously. When you detect ego behavior in yourself, smile. At times you may even laugh. How could humanity have been taken in by this for so long? Above all, know that the ego isn’t personal. It isn’t who you are. If you consider the ego to be your personal problem, that’s just more ego.”
