Why Do We Look For Rules?
It may come as a shock to you, but there is NO UNIVERSAL best time to post on social media. Bummer?
Think about it, though. Why would we all want to post at the same time, hence making ourselves even more invisible?
My social media clients often ask for the “rules” in social media.
“How am I supposed to act on social media?”
“What works best – success guaranteed?”
I mostly disappoint them with my first reply: there are no rules, you have to find your OWN way. But when explaining it a bit more, they usually light up. Finding your own way, means you get to explore, test, make mistakes, discover new territories. The technology is there to support you, you just have to be willing to take some risk. The only fear people generally have, is to test their (online) communication skills in public. At least Christopher Columbus could explore the seas and shout “I’ve found the sailing route to India!”, without anybody laughing at him, or correcting his mistake. Well, not until later, that is.
If only this fanatic search for “rules” would be confined to the Internet. Nope, on a daily basis I hear people asking when the best time is to sell their house, when they “should” have kids, how their lives “should” be more organized, according to..uhm…which rule exactly?
Why is it so hard to let go of those rules?
How about a little more limitlessness?
I think it’s possible to let go of the quest for rules. I just hope it doesn’t have to become a “rule” to do so…
